Odesa celebrates City Day on September 2
The history of the city is well known only since 1415 as the city of Khadzhibey, although people began to settle on the territory of present-day Odessa in ancient times. For the first time, the name of the city Odesa is found on January 10, 1795.
There are several versions of the origin of the name "Odesa": the first is that this city was named after the ancient Greek colony "Odesos", which was located in the Northern Black Sea; second, that the word "Odessa" is a read French expression "assez d'eau" or "enough water", which was born as a result of royal debates about the lack of fresh water near the site chosen for the construction of the city by the will of Empress Catherine II.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the city began to develop rapidly in connection with the export of grain, and soon Odesa became one of the most important foreign trade centers of the country.
